Properties
Tiger Balm is purported to help relieve aches and pains in the joints, especially in cases of osteoarthritis. It is also often used for relieving muscle tension after physical exercise.
Castor oil is a great oil for breaking up stagnation and tension. Menthol may help restrict blood vessels, reducing inflammation. Camphor may increase blood flow to the surface of the skin, creating a therapeutic cooling/warming sensation that can distract from pain and stiffness. Camphor and menthol may also improve blood circulation to the muscles, potentially speeding up healing time and reducing inflammation.
The capsicum from chillies acts as an analgesic and numbs the skin, which may reduce stiffness and aches. It blocks nerve receptors that transmit pain impulses, creating a warm sensation that can lessen the intensity of muscle aches and strains. Capsicum may reduce many types of pains, including those from arthritis, musculoskeletal, and gastrointestinal problems.
Moreover, Tiger Balm contains ingredients that may help relieve sinus and chest congestion. Some have been used for centuries in oils, ointments, and inhalant form to ease congestion from colds and allergies. Camphor acts as a mild expectorant, nasal decongestant, and cough suppressant. Menthol may help soothe irritated nasal passageways, helping to relieve stuffy noses.
Contraindications
– For external use only.
– Avoid during pregnancy and when breastfeeding.
– Store away from children and do not use it on those under 7 years old unless a doctor recommends it.
– Avoid contact with the eyes and do not apply near the eyes. Always wash your hands after use and do not touch your eyes or face.
– Warning: depending on your sensitivity, the ‘ice cube’ effect may be felt more or less strongly. Always test the effect on a small area before using it on a larger one.
– If a person has not used Tiger Balm before, it is best to test a small amount on the forearm or the inner crease of the elbow (24 to 48 hours before use) to detect a possible allergic reaction. Wait a full day and check for reactions before applying the balm to a larger area.

– Not to be used on people with epilepsy or a history of seizures.
